Arlene has been a therapist in the alternative world for 20 years. Starting off training with the College of Holisttic Medicine, with Massage. Her focus changed after the birth of her own child and she then went on to train as a Active Birth Teacher and Birth Educator. That developed her interest in Yoga, and to deepen her understanding she trained as a Yoga teacher with Association of Independent Yoga Practitioners. She then came full circle to rekindle her interest in Cranio-sacral therapy and is now a Registered Cranio-Sacral therapist practising in East London.
Her post graduate training extends to specializing with famillies. Studying with Claire Dolby, from the Karuna Centre, Jaap Van Der Val workshop on Speech of the Embryo, Gary Roba - neutral as well as continual training from Biodynamic field for 2 years with Michael Kern. She also shares her experience by giving talks on her work with Birth and Craniosacral therapy to students of College of Craniosacral Therapy. She will also be working with trainee midwives in the future.
What is Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral therapy is a light touch, non invasive therapy. Which helps to bring the body back into a state of balanced health, so the bodies own healing abilities can work effectively.
It is a safe and effective treatment for all people of all age.
Within the treatment the practitioner is able to palpate and assist and allow the subtle movements of cranial bones; connection with the sacrum and releasing of held stresses and traumas caught in the body and its systems. This encourages, better blood flow, cerebrospinal fliud and nerve pathways to be more effective. Having a knock on effect throughout the whole body.
Children and Babies
Birth is one of the most stressful and traumatic events for both mother and baby. The babies cranial bones are soft at birth. This allows the bones of the cranium to overlap, so that the baby can be birthed through the birth canal. The moulding that takes place often release a few days after birth, but some times patterns get held, especially if the birth was difficult or instrumental delivery has taken place. But not exclusively. Babies who have had a perfectly natural and straight forward birth sometimes manifest difficulties, and this presents as restlessness, crying, colic and unhappy baby.
A craniosacral treatment at this early stage can help alleviate these birth patterns, and babies have been know to respond well to treatment.
Mothers too can have a stressful and traumatic time, throughout the pregnancy and birth.
More and more women are receiving fertility treatment in order to get pregnant. I am encountering a lot more women who have had to have fertility treatment to get pregnant. This is not without its own anxieties and worries.
The change of identity and sense of self, and dealing with the physiological changes that come with pregnancy can be a challenging time for the couple.
The statistic shows that 30% of pregnant woman have some sort of traumatic delivery, whether it be a prolonged labour, instrumental delivery or c-section. These life changing events and decisions can impact on the woman in an emotion, physical and psychological way and can have far reaching affects for mother, baby and her relationship with her partner.
Craniosacral therapy can assists the woman to work through these changes as she slowly orientates to the new changes in life.
This therapy is not exclusive to pregnant women it is a very effective treatment for a number of issues.
